Your April Hit List – Where You Should Be Eating and Drinking in Doha This Month

This is no April fool’s joke – Mad March is done and dusted and we are running headlong into April and soon the second half of the year. There is a lot to be excited about this month – new concepts and menus as many try to squeeze the last drops out of us before Ramadan. So here it is – where you should be spending your dining and drinking riyals in Doha this month: Oishi Sushi As they say, out of sight and out of mind. I had forgotten about this gem of a restaurant tucked away in a corner of Royal Plaza until they took the recent food…

Is the New York Steakhouse Brunch the Best in Doha Right Now?

Forget your gimmicks, your themed events and fancy dress.  For me – good Friday brunch experience has a number of key elements – good food, great service and yes, crowd-pleasing music. And there are many around town – Nobu, Market at the W Doha, Shangtastic at Shangri-La who get it spot-on. But last year, a new and surprising entrant shook up the brunch scene – the Big Apple Brunch New York Steakhouse at Marriott Marquis. Besides my sporadic trips to Quick Bites and Ipanema, frankly I never rated this hotel for its food and beverage. For me, it was a little too cookie cutter – big hotel, no real personality. So…

Future State: New Qatar Restaurant Openings to Look Forward to in 2018

It was the best of times…it was the…not so best of times. It’s fair to say that in dining terms, 2017 didn’t have the extreme wow factor of previous Doha dining years but we still had a lot to like. But 2018 beckons and it’s time to peruse what it has in store for foodies in Qatar – and the line-up looks solid. Walima: Mondrian Doha was one of the shining lights of 2017 – thanks to some inventive restaurants and attitude to match. Walima is their greatly anticipated Qatari restaurant and if the interiors are anything to go by, this will be a high watermark. Add in the stunning…

We Meat Again – Review of Fuego Steakhouse

On my first visit to this restaurant, waiting for our meals, our table stopped chatting mid sentence as we watched a very Qatar tableaux unfold outside the picture window. We sat in wonder as watched the hotel’s iconic and magnificent falcon, called Shang, I believe, exit the building with his handler. The falcon wasn’t ushered into a high end luxury car as we expected, rather a humble older model Toyota Camry and driven off into the night. It was a truly Doha moment. The falcon, which resides in hooded majesty in the hotel’s lobby, is one of the unique touches this hotel has created to set itself apart in a…

Steak Your Claim – Win a Saturday Brunch for Two at JW’s Steakhouse

I don’t know what it is about Saturdays, but I always manage to get a lot done. Last Saturday is a great example. I went to the gym, did the grocery shopping, shouted at my father over the phone for a while, lay around in my stretchy pants, marveled at the week of rain in Doha, went to the post office, negotiated the Spratly Islands dispute, nominated for a UN post, wrote a dissertation about Brexit and its effect on my online shopping habits*…and went to brunch at JW’s Steakhouse at the Doha Marriott. While Friday brunches are still a thing, Saturday is the new Friday in Doha and more places, like the venerable…

Table for One – The 10 Best Places for Solo Dining in Doha

Let’s face it, there is something perversely indulgent about eating alone in a restaurant. I love eating out with AZ, but our schedules don’t always allow for it. And my Squad is also sometimes elusive for the same reason. Also, occasionally I just like a bit of alone time. So, armed with my iPad and some magazines,  I regularly take myself out for a meal. It’s usually breakfast or lunch but sometimes I veer into dinner territory. I discovered the innate pleasure of dining alone many, many years ago. I have dined alone all round the world – in Michelin star restaurants in Florence and also in shacks by the…

Giveaway Alert – Win Dinner for Two at Prime Luxury Steakhouse

WARNING! This post and the giveaway may result in meat sweats! I know, I’m biased, but I think Australian beef and lamb is some of the finest produce in the world. Australians love their meat especially lamb when Intercontinental Doha The City approached me to collaborate on their inaugural Taste of Australia promotion, there was never any doubt I would say yes. The hotel’s premium steak house has joined forces with Meat and Livestock Australia and the Australian Embassy in Qatar to promote the very best of our produce. Until February 28 you can sample selection of Australian beef and lamb including prime rump steak, lamb leg and braised beef cheeks. All diners who choose the menu during…

Beefed Up – Review of The Anvil Rooms

I had a phase (and by phase I mean 18 months) at university when I became a vegetarian. I’m not sure what prompted it, seemed like the thing to do at the time. Like wearing Doc Martins and raging against “The Man”. One day, about 18 months in, I decided to start eating chicken again. Then the floodgates opened and I have been making up for that 18 month lapse for the last 25 years. I love a good steak and especially love a good steakhouse, there is something about their warm, clubby environment, their comfy chairs and the proliferation of onion rings that make me very, very happy. This…
