    Quiche De Resistance

I am so old that I remember when quiche became really trendy in Australia. I am hoping it was the 1980s, but I have an ugly suspicion it was the 1970s. Suddenly it was everywhere and even Sara Lee was making them… Although known as a classic French dish, the quiche originated in Germany. The word quiche means “cake” which came from the German word Kuchen. Today, quiche is considered as typically French. And to be honest, it has become one of my favorite foods over time. What’s not to love about eegs, cheese, pastry and of course, cheese. Quiche lorraine is a popular variant that was originally an open…

    Wheel of Cheese Fortune

The thing I love about having a blog dedicated to one topic, rather than random musings (I have Facebook and Twitter for that), is that my friends near and far collect the most amazing stuff for me. This comes in the form of websites, newspaper stories and infographics like this one which came from the lovely Sarah Rabbani (who I want to be when I grow up) That’s a chart of 66 of the world’s favorite cheeses and yes, I have already pre-ordered one for the bedroom. For more information check out Pop Chart Lab or here at our friends Buzzfeed Food

    In Queso Wondering…

Before I write a book about cheese, I plan to write another tome. Conversations With My Cleaner will feature the wit and wisdom of Tess, my cleaner of two years. I know that my cleaner judges me. She does it openly. Aside from ironing my underpants, Tess has a number of well thought out theories about life, the universe and why I am not married. According to Tess, a woman of my style, savoire faire and general fabulousness should not be without a husband. She believes, the reason for this anomaly is the fact that I only have cheese (and the odd bottle of wine) in the fridge on any…

Romano Wasn’t Built in a Day

I was looking forward to a quiet evening in with a bootleg copy of Behind the Candelabra and a cheeky glass of Malbec. Hopes were ashed by a friend, who upon hearing of said glittering bootleg, invited themselves over. Not one to order in, I decided to kill two well dressed birds with one stone and use the hunk of Romano I had in the fridge. Now combining seafood with cheese is controversial. Once in a restaurant in Sydney which shall remain nameless, the waiter refused to give me parmesan for my seafood linguine as “That’s NOT right”. Well, my taste buds maybe wired differently. I had planned a simple…

Life on the Wedge Goes on the Road

It’s the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere and that means one thing for us in the Middle East – travel. I have my own travel plans brewing up until the end of September (interspersed with some work!). But need your help for places to find the best food in these destinations. My plans include: – India (Chennai) – Oman – Sweden (Stockholm) – Australia (Melbourne, Perth, Sydney) – Washington DC, New Orleans and Seattle Email me, message me or leave a comment here with your suggestions!

Melting Pot – Fun, Friends and Melted Cheese Five Ways

I have a theory that in a previous life, I hailed from the deep south of the US. I love the food. Don’t mind a bit of New Orleans Jazz and can say “y’all” with aplomb. The handful of times I have been south of the Mason Dixon line, I felt very much at home. One trip to New Orleans some time in the early 2000s, I was traveling with my friend Allan, who contracted what we would later find out to be pneumonia (which also necessitated an Emergency Room visit while in DC). We stayed in a huge southern mansion which had been converted to a guest house and…

    Half Baked or Cheese Cake…

One of the most amazing things about doing this blog is the enthusiasm and support I have received from my friends and loved ones. Nearly everyone who is important to me has played a role in this…either as a partner in crime, a supporter or just a “suggester”. I am in awe of everyone who has supported me and continues to. Thanks to everyone who has made a suggestion, helped with a photograph, came along on an adventure, enabled access to cheese, organized a tasting, sent me some goodies or gave me feedback and encouragement and even read this blog! Here’s to more adventures as I head off over the…

Hadju Go – When You Are Hungary for Some European Cheese

I love Hungary, well Budapest. It’s like all of the really good things about Europe – food, wine, history, good looking people – all combined into one easily accessible and reasonably priced place. I like it so much I am vaguely considering buying an apartment there, as my European bolthole (well, more like a money spinner). Hungary makes great wine and also some great cheese. I found this variety of Kashkaval in my Doha supermarket and was immediately smitten. This is a kashkaval-type cheese with the characteristic full, tasty and slighly salty flavour that reminds us of nuts. It can easily be cut, it is stiff but when bent it…

When is a Cheese Not a Cheese? When it’s a “Cheese Food”

My lack of pretension about food and in particular, cheese is well known. I have always been in the “if it tastes good…don’t ask questions” school. But while researching something food-related for my real day job (which is in PR by the way), I came across this interesting piece about the facts and the science behind processed cheese. 10 Things to Know About Processed Cheese When I say “processed cheese”, apparently what I really mean is “cheese food”. As it can’t actually be classified as “cheese”. “Cheese food” is a food product made from normal cheese and sometimes other unfermented dairy ingredients, plus emulsifiers, extra salt, food colorings, or whey.…

You’re Crackers – Cheese Making Granny Fires Up Over Ban

The saga of the cheese rolling ban recently covered in this blog here continues. Now police asked a cheese making granny to help them with their inquiries by ceasing and desisting selling the offending cheese to undesirables. Ban my cheese? You’re crackers Anyone else thinks this sounds more like a plot from Midsomer Murders aka the most murderous county in the UK?
